这是一个令人触目惊心的场面，一个令人魂飞魄散的时刻。
　　令人惊骇的是，一个强壮的男人正落入鳄鱼的血盆大口；不可思议的是，此刻的鳄鱼几乎已被吞入河马的腹中；更蹊跷的是，河马此时又被一条鲨鱼咬住了尾部---一场生与死的较量正处在悬而未决的临界点上。引人注目的是，而所有这些杀戮者又都被一根紧紧抓在男人手里的钓索连接在一起---这个男人是垂钓者，他是这一捕杀与生死连环套中最关键的一环。
　　这是一个超现实主义的奇观---河马和鳄鱼是陆地河塘动物，鲨鱼是海洋霸王，在现实世界中它们不可能相聚，人类也不可能与它们同时遭遇。这是一个存在主义的寓言---萨特告诉我们：“我努力把我从他人的支配中解放出来，反过来力图控制他人，而他人也力图控制我。”在我们栖居的地球上，在我们生活的社会中，危机四伏，险象环生，每一个生命无不处在异己力量的钳制中，孤独、不安和恐惧深深地潜藏在我们的内心深处。
　　这原本只是一件视觉性的装置作品，但却被艺术家演绎成了一部疑窦丛生、引人入胜的叙事戏剧。在一场惊心动魄的搏斗之后，三具动物的尸体横陈在鲜血流淌的地面上，男人无影无踪，留下一行血红的脚印。他是死里逃生，还是最终毙命？---这是一个令人疑惑的悬案。
　　在展厅的墙面上，一张小小的照片构成了整个作品的楔子，那是陈文令1996年3月22日在厦门鼓浪屿皓月园海宝亭、遭遇三个歹徒抢劫、被砍二十多刀、血流遍地的现场照片。---人们应该不难认出，作品中那个男人形象正是陈文令的自塑像。然而，这件作品不是艺术家个人人生经历的微观叙事，它揭示的是整个人类既真实可感又不可言状的生命困境。
　　将动物作为人类的象征形象，借此讽喻人类的动物性缺陷，是陈文令长期以来的艺术创作策略，但将生与死引入创作主题对他而言还是第一次，对生死课题的探究使这位年轻艺术家的创作超越了现实和人性的表层、骤然跃升到一个崭新而崇高的境界。通过这件作品，陈文令试图穿越生命的困境，抵达心灵自由之门；他迫使我们直面血腥与残酷，进而直面自己的灵魂与命运。
　　站在陈文令《悬案》作品之前，尽管心存疑惑，但我听到了萨特的另一句箴言：“在你的面前，永远有一个未来。”

Thisisasceneofshock,amomentofpanic.
Whatfrightenedusis,astrongmanisfallingintothebloodymouthofacrocodile;andsurprisingly,thiscrocodileisalmostswallowedbyahippopotamusatthesametime;anditisevenmoreamazingtoseethatthebackofthehippopotamusisbeingsnappedbyashark.Thereisbattleoflifeanddeathpendingonacriticalpoint.Andthemosteye-catchingelementisallthesepredatorsareconnectedbyafishingwirewhichwasheldtightlyintheman’shand.Thismanisthefishermen,whichisalsothemostcrucialringinthechainoflifeanddeath.
Thisisasurrealisticwonder:hippopotamusandcrocodilearelandandfreshwateranimalswhilethesharkisthekingoftheocean,thereisrarepossibilitythattheycanbetogetherinthissituationinthereality,nottomentionwithahumanallatonce.Thisworkisaallegoryofexistentialism,likeJean-PaulSartreoncetoldus:Iamtryingtofreemyselffromthedominationofotheronesandinturn,todominatethem,whileotheronesaretryingtodominateme.Onthisplant,inthissociety,therearecrisesanddangerseverywhere,andnotasinglelivecanwithdrawfromthisstruggleofdifferenceforces;theloneliness,theinsecurityandthefearishidinginthedeepofourhearts.
Theartistturnsthisvisualinstallationworkintoanenchantingshowfilledwithmysteries.Afterathrillingbattle,threedeadbodiesoftheanimalsareleftontheflood-flowingground,andthemanisoutofsightbutonlyabloodytrailoffootprints.Didheescapeordeadattheend?Thisisatruewonderingsuspense.
Onthewalloftheexhibitionhall,manytinyphotosformedtheintrooftheentireartwork.Thesearefromthecrimescenephotosof22ndMarch1996,atHaibaoting,HaoyuePark,Gulangyu,Xiamen,wheretheartist-WenlingChen-wasrobbed,andhackedovertwentytimesbythreerobbers,bloodwaseverywhere.Itisnothardtorecognizethemanintheworkisaself-sculptureofChenhimself.However,thisworkisnotastory-tellingofapersonalexperienceoftheartistinnarrowsense,butarevealofthepredicamentsinallhumanlives,whicharerealandsensible,butcannotbedescribed.
Takinganimalsaspictographicsymbolofhumans,toprojectandsatirizetheanimalitydefectsinhumanbeing,isanartisticcreativestrategycanbefoundinmanyChen’sworks.Butbringingthetopicoflifeanddeathintohisworkisafirsttime.Andhisexplorationontheissuesrelatedtodeathbringsthisyoungartistandhiscreationtoanewelevatedlevel,piercingthroughthesurfacelayerofhumannature.Inthispiecework,WenlingChentriestotraversethepredicamentinlives,reachthespiritualgateoffreedom;heforcesustoconfrontthebloodandcruelty,andfromthere,weconfrontoursoulanddestiny.
